Have you done the Boysenberry Crawl?

Suki Beasla

Sukhraj (pronounced "sook-raj," meaning “Queen of Happiness”) Beasla usually goes by the name Suki. Born and raised on a farm in the vast agricultural hub that is the Central Valley of California, Suki loves food, the emotions it inspires, and talking about it on her blog, forktopen.com. When she’s not enjoying all things food, she prefers tech toys over diamonds, is a marathoner, a voracious reader, a firm believer in retail therapy (i.e. a shopaholic), and starting new trends like cat mommy blogging.

You’ve heard of beer crawls and other types of crawls, but there’s nothing quite like the sweetness of a Boysenberry Crawl. It’s something you can only do at Knott’s Berry Farm. At heart, I’m a sweets kinda girl. If you find my vice I’m yours for the taking, so I was excited to gallivant around Knott’s and bring that same joy to you.

Stop #1: The Marketplace: Did you know that Knott’s Berry Farm started off as an actual farm? It’s not just a fancy name for an amusement park. It was once a 20-acre property which has now been expanded to 160 acres of rides, attractions, and other fun activities for adults and kids alike. This resonates well with me because I also grew up on a farm so naturally the Marketplace was the first stop on my boysenberry crawl. I needed caffeine to get my day started and lo and behold, the house boysenberry coffee is available as the “flavor of the day”—all day, every day.

Before taking a sip, what I first noticed was the heavenly aroma. If you’re looking to capture Knott’s Berry Farm in a cup, this is it. The flavor is not too sweet and I suggest not adding sugar but just a dollop of cream to balance out the lovely flavors. While sipping your coffee, I recommend you take a tour of the Marketplace. It’s like being home in Mrs. Knott’s kitchen with a lovely spread of jams, syrups, and everything your heart could desire.

Stop #2: Ghost Town: During Scary Farm, this can be a pretty terrifying place to get caught in, but on a warm sunny day it’s a great spot to grab my favorite childhood treat–a funnel cake! At Sutter’s Grill, there is a separate window for you to order funnel cake and top to your heart’s desire. You can get a plain funnel cake with powdered sugar, a loaded funnel cake with a topping of your choice, or go big with a fully loaded funnel cake which includes one topping and a scoop of ice cream. Yum! As much as my heart yearned for a nice cold scoop of the ice cream, I decided to opt for a boysenberry topped funnel cake. After ordering, you can watch your funnel cake being prepared in another window and wait in anticipation as your treat is being served up.

My treat arrived piping hot with a generous serving of boysenberries and powdered sugar on top. The sweetness of the boysenberries paired off with the crispy cake made my childhood memories come flooding back. However, this is quite an indulgent treat so I shared some with a family sitting close by.

Stop #3: Log Ride: An advantage of living in California is the wonderful weather we get year round but it sure can get hot! Fortunately, the log ride area has something wonderful to help you cool down – the boysenberry Icee! The Icee comes in a tall, twisty, fun cup color of your choice – green or pink. I chose pink and mixed it up with other fun flavors that were available. The boysenberry Icee is a secret farm recipe but it does include their famous syrup. Unlike other flavors, it’s not too sweet and quite easy to slurp down as you’re walking through the park with your fancy schmancy cup.

Stop #4: Boardwalk. I couldn’t leave the park without trying the much talked about boysenberry latte! If you’re hunting it down, it might be easy to miss, so head straight for Johnny Rockets and you’ll see it in the corner at a place called “Gourmet Coffee Hut.” Once you spot the Starbucks sign overhead, you’re at the right place. If you’re going to get the boysenberry latte, I suggest you make no substitutions and just order it the way Gourmet Coffee Hut makes it to get all the flavor– includes espresso, steamed milk, boysenberry, and a generous helping of whipped cream. I won’t tell anyone if you don’t go non-fat, skinny, etc. Life is too short not to indulge once in a while. You’ll thank me later when you take that first sip because I couldn’t believe just how amazing it was.

The boysenberry flavor in the latte comes from the house syrup–a mixture of cane sugar, boysenberries, water, lemon juice, and pectin. Gourmet Coffee Hut buys it by the case just to make the latte and it has quickly become a hit. I wish it was available outside of the park but it just gives me an excuse to keep visiting over and over again. Knott’s Berry Farm has plenty of hidden boysenberry treats throughout the park, so stay tuned for another installment of the boysenberry crawl and be sure to visit Knott’s for your own boysenberry adventure.
